John Koegel

FLINT, Michigan — John Koegel rests easy with the knowledge that he’s making a difference.

Koegel, 46, has volunteered countless hours of service to the Cub Scouts for the past 12 years. In return, he’s received a reward money couldn’t buy.

“The most fulfilling part is the knowledge that I’m helping to offer young men a positive experience, to help them become leaders, one where they learn to "Do Your Best" — the Cub Scout motto — in something besides sports,” said Koegel, President of Koegel Meats in Flint and member of First Presbyterian Church of Flint.

Koegel’s first involvement with the organization came after being asked to be the Head of Exploring — now called “Venturing” — a program that exposes high school students to various career opportunities.

From there, he was asked to become the Vice President of Operations. He has also been a Tiger Cub, Wolf and Bear Den Leader and a part-time Cub Master with Pack 110 since March 2009.

“It’s through God's love for me that I’m to love others, to be a servant, and to help others in any way I can,” said Koegel, who lives in Flint Township with his wife, Lisa, and their four children. “To whom much has been given, much is expected, and I believe that I’ve been given much!”

And through his service, Koegel says he learned something about himself: making sacrifices for others is both rewarding and, from time to time, even fun.

“I’ve learned that I like to help make a difference in this community and in people's lives,” he said.
