Music Opportunities for College Students

The First Presbyterian Church in downtown Flint offers a rich tradition of musical excellence as an integral part of its worship life.

First Presbyterian Church is committed to the nurture and encouragement of young music students.  Alumni of the church occupy musical positions throughout the country including such organizations as the Juilliard School, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Choral Society and other distinguished organizations.

First Presbyterian Church provides both paid and volunteer opportunities for young musicians who wish to apply their art to the life of the church.

Academic Year, Comprehensive Opportunity:

First Presbyterian Chruch Music Fellowship
The Fellowship exits to engage, nurture and encourage gifted students of music in various aspects of church music.  The Fellowship can be crafted to the needs and goals of the student and would include regular choral participation, rehearsal preparation, assigned readings and discussion.

Fellowships are awarded on the basis of application, recommendation, audition, and interview.  A separate detailed description of this Fellowship is available from First Presbyterian Church.

Short Term Occasional Opportunities:
These opportunities require less time commitment and permit a more flexible schedule of musical participation.

Sunday Worship Soloists:
Worship Service is each Sunday at 9:30am.  Vocal and Instrumental student musicians interested in performing a solo or small ensemble piece appropriate for worship are encouraged to contact the Music and Fine Arts Department of First Presbyterian Church.  The church will provide an accompanist as needed.

Volunteer Opportunities:
First Presbyterian Church offers this wide variety of highly accomplished musical ensembles and strongly encourages your participation in them.

Chancel Choir:  presents traditional choral music aspiring to the highest artistic standards.  Singers in all voice parts are welcomed.  Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm.  Sunday review is at 8:45am and worship is at 9:30am.

Genesee Valley Youth Chorale:  this regional youth choir meets at the church, Sunday eveings at 5:45pm

Concert Handbells:  this ensemble rehearses Sundays at noon.  The church owns two, five-octave sets of handbells cast by Whitechapel and Malmark Foundries.

School of Choirs:  assisting/accompanying our professioanl staff with graded childrens choir program.
