September 2011: Prostate Awareness Month

Genesee County Cancer Connection offers free prostate cancer screenings

(GENESEE COUNTY, MI) During September - National Prostate Cancer Awareness
Month - the Genesee County Cancer Connection will again sponsor free prostate cancer
screenings for men.

Tuesday, Sept. 13 and Wednesday, Sept. 28:  5 pm to 6 pm

Great Lakes Cancer Institute - McLaren
4100 Beecher Road, Flint

Thursday, Sept. 15 and Thursday, Sept. 22:  6 pm to 7 pm


Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute
302 Kensington Avenue, Flint

Screenings are conducted on a walk-in basis only. No appointments are accepted.

Those eligible for the free screenings include:

men age 50 and older

African american men

men with a family history of prostate cancer who are 40 and older

men who have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer and/or are not presently
under the care of a urologist

Screenings, conducted by a physician, will include a digital rectal examination
and a blood draw sample for a PSA test.

In Genesee County, prostate cancer is one of the top three leading causes of
cancer. In fact, prostate cancer rates are higher in this county than in
Michigan and the US. Rates are much higher in African American men. Early
detection and education is essential to help prevent and fight this disease.

The Genesee County Cancer Connection is comprised of Genesys Health System,
Hurley Medical Center, McLaren Regional Medical Center and other community
organizations who work together to conduct cancer screenings, research and
educational programs to help fight cancer.
