  WELCOME

Welcome to the Web Site of the First Presbyterian Church of Flint, a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA). First Presbyterian Church is eager to greet you with the warmth and welcome of Jesus Christ. This congregation is now in its 170th year of being engaged by Christ's love to invite, worship, nurture and serve. Together, we endeavor to bring the power and love of Jesus Christ to bear upon all the seasons of life.

First Presbyterian Church is eager to greet you with the warmth and welcome of Jesus Christ. Please consider this website an invitation to step more deeply into the life and work of this servant community. And in so doing, may the joy of the Lord make you whole.

First Presbyterian Church is a community of Gods children engaged by Christs love inviting all to Gods good news in Jesus Christ; worshiping and centering on God; nurturing each other through caring, spiritual growth, understanding, and fellowship; and serving those in need. This web site shows some of the ways we are nurturing each other.

Search through these offerings and find places that will nurture you into discipleship. We cannot give what we have not received. These opportunities offer you gifts to learn, to be encouraged, to receive care, and to be empowered to live a faithful life.

As you read, you will discover programs for children, youth, adults, singles, couples, senior citizens, and families. Find ones that will meet your needs and others that will challenge you. Most importantly, get involved. By participating in these ministries of nurture you are opening yourself up to be engaged by Christs love.

God loves you. God wants you to grow in your discipleship. God is with you.

Peace, Rev. Dr. John L. Musgrave

INVITE,

Jesus Christ commands us to go and make disciples. At First Presbyterian Church, the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ is one of our purposes, and we INVITE you

  • to worship with us,
  • to grow with us,
  • to become part of this faith community.
We INVITE you to First Presbyterian Church...a place where people can worship the living God, be loved and nurtured, and be challenged to live a meaningful life.

WORSHIP,

As a faith community, we gather at First Presbyterian Church to WORSHIP...to praise God, to ask for forgiveness, to listen to the mighty acts of God through scripture and word proclaimed, to respond in affirmation of faith and offerings, to celebrate the sign and seal of Gods word in sacraments of Baptism and the Table, and to commit ourselves to discipleship. At First Presbyterian Church, our worship is enhanced by a dynamic music ministry with a historic commitment to excellence. WORSHIP with us.

NUTURE,

First Presbyterian Church is committed to educate Gods people of all ages through discipleship preparing them for ministry. In doing this, we learn to NURTURE, fulfilling Jesus second command to love your neighbor as yourself. Our members bring comfort in time of grief, healing at a time of brokenness, help at a time of weakness, and spiritual fellowship where relationships are modeled after Christs love. Our numerous opportunities for fellowship, growth, and ministry include:

and SERVE.

Jesus commands us to reach out to those in need: to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to visit the sick. At First Presbyterian Church, our congregation is committed to reaching out to those in need, both within and outside the church. We are a church that chooses to be actively involved in the city of Flint, the surrounding community, and abroad. Some of the ways in which we SERVE are:

The Presbyterian TRADITION

The Presbyterian Church derives its name from the Greek word Prebuteros which means Elder. The Presbyterian form of government is characterized by governance by Elders who are chosen from the congregation for leadership. The First Presbyterian Church of Flint is a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) which was formed in June 1983 by the joining of the major northern and southern branches of Presbyterianism. These two churches had been separated since the Civil War, and this reunification was a major step in uniting Presbyterians across this country. As a Presbyterian Church, we uphold the Tenets of Reformed Faith. Among these are: Gods grace is discovered in Jesus Christ who is the incarnation of the Word of God. Gods love and graces comes as a free gift to which we respond with faith. Scriptures, by the Holy Spirit, are the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ and the rule of life. Our Sovereign God calls us to service as stewards of all life and to community that shows the love of Christ. We are to confess our tendency to idolatry. With Gods help, we seek the transformation of society by seeking justice and living in obedience to the Word of God.
