John calls his listeners a “brood of vipers,” yet the crowds keep asking, “What should we do?” His answers are startlingly ordinary: share your clothing, be honest in your work, refuse to exploit others. Advent joy takes tangible form in everyday justice.
John points away from himself to the One coming with Holy Spirit and fire. Joy deepens when we remember Christ is the center, not our own success or righteousness. Our good works prepare the way, but they are always grounded in God’s greater work.
